The Plot

Waters of Brightness

Elio, is a blind musician renowned for her moving account of a classic battle tale from the middle ages. Whilst resident at a monastery, she is beckoned one night by a visiting noble, to come and recite the sad tale to the assembled court. She does so and spends the whole night performing. The next night she is summoned again and she performs all night once more. The monastery's abbot is perplexed however and Elio evades any questions as to where her nocturnal wanderings take her.

Waters of Brightness So on the third night, amidst a terrible storm, servants are sent out to follow the musician. They eventually find her sitting in the cemetery, playing and singing whilst around her dance the fiery souls of the long-lost battle victims. In her visions, she sees the final stages of the tragic battle played out in front of her, climaxing with the empress and heir committing suicide. It is the unhappy souls of the perished clan who have summoned her thus to recite their own fateful tale. In her delirium she has not realised she has been bewitched.

The priest resolves to save her by writing the text of the holy sutras all over her body. She is instructed to sit in a state of meditation the following night, and to resist any urge to move when she is summoned once more. The visiting spirit warrior can no longer find Elio however he does spy her ears which have not been protected by the holy text. In a rage he tears off the ears, leaving Elio now deaf, blind, and bloodied. She is alive however and in the face of adversity she pursues her art to even greater heights of fame and achievement .
