Inanna's Descent
Inanna is the Goddess of Heaven and Earth. After her nuptials she descends below to confront her deadliest enemy - her sister Ereshkigal - Queen of the Underworld.
Over 5000 years old, the story of Inanna is the credited to be the earliest form of written literature known in existence. Written in cuneiform script on clay tablets, archaeologists and researchers spent years locating and piecing broken fragments together, deciphering the cuneiform script and interpreting the unfinished lines and gaps.
The audience is guided to an underground location where they find themselves at the scene of an archaeological dig. Archaeologists gently brush at fragile objects, workers busy themselves shifting earth in barrows and stacking work tables with artefacts. Just as the tablets were broken and fragmentary, so is the piecing together of this myth. Parts of the story emerge as Innana arises from the rubble.
"Ereshkigal looked at her - it was the look of death. She spoke to her - it was the speech of anger. She shouted at her - it was the shout of heavy guilt. Inanna was turned into a corpse. And the corpse was hung on a hook."
[The next line is fragmentary.]
This new work follows Inanna's descent into the underworld. The show investigates archaeology, fragmentation, and the collector's quest. As contemporary characters uncover the myth of Inanna, so too, the Inanna myth discovers them.
With Inanna's Descent, Kantanka will lead audiences in a sensorial experience - exploring new sites for theatre, old stories rich in visual potential, and resonant themes of our times
No one ascends from the underworld unmarked.
