Carlos and Michael, artistic directors of Theatre Kantanka, welcome you to our website. We offer dynamic theatre with innovative visual design. Our site specific productions engage with theatre forms and texts from diverse origins. The company has always worked with ancient myths as the departure point for its works.

Inanna's Descent, our upcoming production, explores theatre of the underground: tunnels, carparks, reservoirs, and train stations are all possible venues. Our design is self-contained to travel to each venue and be adapted to meet the new demands of each site.

Brief History:
Kantanka's debut production was AveAves in 1996 an adaptation of the Aristophanes classic, The Birds.

In September 1997, Kantanka created Black Hair. This production featured life-size bunraku style puppetry accompanied by a traditional Chinese orchestra. The following year Waters of Brightness was a sell-out production that drew the audience through the Chinese Garden at Darling Harbour, Sydney. In October 1998, the company performed an installation based on The Birds for Open House, part of the Sydney Opera House's 25th birthday celebrations. The Eye, an adaption of the tale of Cylops from The Odyssey, premiering at the 2000 Telstra Adelaide Festival. Initially playing a season the Old Adelaide Goal, its also toured to regional South Australia as part of the Festival.
